The Importance of Regular Health Checks

We are all living longer, and that means that we want to stay healthy. Staying healthy means looking after our bodies.

To stay fit, one of the things we can do is to stop any unhealthy habits that we have such as smoking. Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in many countries. It increases the risk of developing over 50 serious health conditions.

Some of these conditions such as lung cancer are fatal, while others will seriously compromise your quality of life. Excessive consumption of alcohol can also lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, heart attack and various cancers.

In the US, excessive alcohol consumption resulted in around 88,000 deaths from 2006 to 2010, with lives shortened by 30 years on average. Many people think that only alcoholics suffer from such conditions, but in fact anyone who frequently consumes more than the recommended limit is at risk.

The Importance of Health Checks

Maintaining a healthy weight is important. Excessive weight puts a strain on the cardiovascular system and can lead to serious conditions such as diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Eating a healthy balanced diet that limits the amount of sugar and salt consumed will help you to control your weight.

Exercise is also good for the body and mind. Cardiovascular exercise helps to strengthen the heart and lungs, while strength training and stretching helps to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain that can improve our mood. There is also evidence that exercise helps stimulate the growth of nerves and synapses.

Sleep affects our physical and mental health, so getting enough of it is important for staying healthy. While we sleep, the body repairs itself. People who suffer from a lack of sleep can find that it adversely affects their mood, concentration, metabolism, memory, motor skills, cardiovascular health and immune system.

As we get older, we are more likely to suffer from aches and pains. Chronic back pain can be debilitating, and it can affect not only your physical wellbeing, but also your mental health. If you suffer from back pain, you should talk to your doctor.

Your doctor may be able to prescribe medication that will help with the pain and any anxiety that you may be suffering. You may also ask about visiting a specialist such as Healthquest Chiropractic, which specializes in treating chronic back pain. Other conditions that are more common as we age are cancers, Parkinson’s disease, infections, diabetes and thyroid dysfunction.

Not everyone will suffer from these conditions, and many of us will stay healthy well into old age, but regular check-ups should be an important part of staying healthy. The prognosis for many conditions is better if the condition is caught early.

You can carry out some of these check-ups yourself, such as checking for breast or testicular cancer. However, it is also a good idea to have an annual check-up and discuss any changes in your health that you have noticed with your doctor.
