The verdict's in. People who exercise
regularly really do live longer. Researchers at the University Medical
Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands have proven through extensive studies
that people who had moderate to high-levels of activity live years longer
than those who get little exercise. Largely because they put off developing
heart disease - the leading killer in the U.S..
A regular, moderate cardiovascular exercise
routine is all it takes. In the last few years more and more people
have been turning to elliptical trainers to help them meet this goal.
Elliptical trainers provide a combination of motions that provide aerobic,
strength and flexibility benefits all-in-one.
They offer a low-impact, efficient workout
in less time than other popular home fitness equipment because you're
working both your upper and lower body at the same time. An exercise
session of only 20 minutes on an elliptical trainer is all you need
to quickly elevate your heart rate for a great cardiovascular workout
and burn those calories for efficient weight loss.
Here are some guidelines to consider when
looking at elliptical trainers:
1. Make sure that the elliptical trainer
is properly fitted for your size. You should be able to move comfortably
with a smooth, fluid motion.
2. Think about one that allows you to
adjust the incline level. This will allow you to vary your routine and
increase the intensity of your workouts.
3. A heart rate monitor is a valuable
option. It gives you instant feedback on the quality of your workout
so you can make adjustments to your exercise session as appropriate.
4. Also, keep safety in mind. Many models
come with non-slip pedals so your feet do not accidently come off when
exercising and make sure it comes with a safety turn-off control.
Then, make sure to commit to using it.
Twenty minutes a day, three to five days a week. Commitment to a regular
physical activity is more important than the intensity of the workouts.
To get the most benefit when using your
elliptical trainer adjust the machine to suit your size and range of
movement. Maintain a good posture by keeping your shoulders back, head
up and slightly forward, chin straight, abdominals tight and your arms
relaxed.
But most importantly, make the use of
your elliptical trainer a habit. Set aside a specific time of day and
a specific number of minutes and make it routine. You will soon be on
your way to a healthier and more vibrant lifestyle.
