News : Tips for weight loss success

The Common Voice - Greenville,SC,USA, September 12 2005 -- Here are just a few tips to help get your weight loss journey started and well on your way to success:

WATER - I always drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. It helps me to keep a bottle of water with me at all times.

PREPARE - When shopping for groceries, don't buy if you shouldn't eat it! Why set yourself up for failure by bringing tempting items into the home? Don't fall for the "but the kids need it" trap! Who really ends up eating the junk? YOU! So don't buy it and don't set yourself up for failure.

MEASURE SNACKS - If you like to snack on things like popcorn cakes, fruits, etc. Measure them BEFORE eating them! It is time consuming ONCE but you'll be happy you did it. How many times have you opened a bag and consumed the whole thing before you realized what happened? Control the munchies before they control YOU!

PLAN - If you work outside of the home or are going to be gone for the day, pack a lunch, snacks and water! I get a lot of emails from people saying they eat fast food when on the road, NOTHING is faster than reaching in your cooler and grabbing a healthy alternative!

ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT WHEN EATING OUT - You are paying for it, so get what you want! Order your meal steamed, poached, broiled...sauces on the side, ½ size portions. Most restaurants are happy to accommodate your needs, but you have to ask for what you want. Waitresses aren't mind readers, but they are happy to help you adhere to your healthy resolves! Who knows, your healthy eating just may inspire them or others eating with you!

DON'T DENY YOURSELF - What? Don't deny yourself a healthy life, but do deny yourself unhealthy foods. It is time that you reverse your old way of thinking and realize that deprivation comes from eating unhealthy foods, not from abstaining from them. When you eat unhealthy foods, you are denying yourself of the body you desire, the healthy life that you aspire to and the satisfaction of knowing you can succeed. Don't deny yourself of what you really want!

SHOP THE PERIMETER OF THE GROCERY STORE - At most grocery stores, the fresh produce, meats, dairy and other essentials can be found on the outside aisles. Venture into the vertical aisles for paper goods, canned items, etc...but avoid the processed foods as much as possible.

ENJOY SPECIALNESS OF "SPECIAL" OCCASIONS - Remember, everywhere you go, there YOU are! By that I mean just because you are on vacation, at a party or a family gathering, doesn't mean you have to leave your healthy eating and habits at home! The specialness of any function should be the people, the event and the fun, not the FOOD! Limit your alcohol intake, too!

EXERCISE - Work your body! Healthy eating alone won't give you a tone body. Exercise needs to become a mandatory if not beloved part of your healthy lifestyle. Like Nike says, Just do it! Once you do, you will get hooked.

UTILIZE A SUPPORT GROUP - You can never get nor give enough support while on this journey. Find a support group that fits with your personality and give yourself to it, it will do you a lot of good!

JOURNAL YOUR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS - Not your food! If you eat something unhealthy, sure keep track of that. But if you are eating healthfully, rather than be a lab rat chronically each bite, ounces and other statistics, keep track of your "WHY's". Learning why you are responding or reacting in certain ways will help you to change your behavior much more than just reading of the behavior itself. Get intouch with your emotions, feelings and desires--and what you really want out of this journey. That will insure success.

TRY NEW FOOD CHOICES - Like Mom said, eat your broccoli! Just because you "don't like it" doesn't mean it isn't good for you. Try to prepare healthy foods in healthy new ways and teach your taste buds healthy habits!

TAKE BABY STEPS - My 130 pounds weight loss didn't happen overnight. It was a gradual process of gradual change over time.
